The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
