Three Lions Coach Shares The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Barry competed in League Two. Today, he's dedicated to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from player to coach started with a voluntary role with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he built a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. We must not just to keep up with developments and to lead and innovate. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To develop a process enabling productivity in that window, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play must reflect the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for development is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
