The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
