The former Liverpool manager says coming back to lead Liverpool is conceivable.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback remains something that could happen. Klopp, post a game-changing nine-season tenure that included a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, now holds roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and providing guidance for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
They secured the league title in the previous campaign, but many fans who revere Klopp would be thrilled by the possibility that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he told the podcast host: “I declared I will never coach a different club within the country. Which implies in case it's my former club...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“Being 58, that means the choice could be mine down the line, I don’t know. Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that. I can just see how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on which situations would have to unfold to tempt his return to management, he confessed he was not instantly drawn toward coming back. “I'm not entirely sure, I love what I do right now,” he said. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing in the rain through long matches; No need for interviews multiple times weekly or constant media duties a week.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the team talking freely, is pleasant. We won a lot of games meaning regularly great spirits at the club. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly of the current boss, crediting him for the adjustments that took the title in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the idea that it might signal a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, critics will regret with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. Ekitike, superb talent. They have a strong well-judged squad. You don’t have to worry over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
The manager expressed deep feeling on the loss of Diogo Jota, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, and the effect on Liverpool. Jota was killed in a road accident together with his sibling recently.
“How do you replace such an individual? It’s not about his footballing ability, it's his character. It's hard to picture the squad missing him. Putting it into words is tough regarding this. It was an incredible shock for the entire squad too. No one within the club might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. Entering the changing area where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that individually is challenging. Overwhelming.”
