The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent term surfaced several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a child who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what unity resembles.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
