Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
