The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
