As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
