Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
