New York Introduces Portal for Public to Submit ICE Videos After Arrests of Four American Citizens
New York state AG has introduced a recent online portal encouraging locals to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This step comes just a shortly after a significant ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting widespread demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained In Raid
A US congressman announced during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker deserves to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a statement.
"For those who saw and documented federal operations during the raid, I ask you to provide that footage with us. We are pledged to assessing these submissions and determining any legal breaches."
Form Details
The portal includes fields to send images and video footage of the incident, plus a field to specify location information. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that confirms that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
Details of the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved over fifty federal agents, occurred in a popular area of the city where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – frequently to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict multiple masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of locals trailed the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the city streets.
Leadership Statements
During a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four US citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the persons were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a excuse to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to stop unrest that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – each of the political contenders denounced the operation, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," a political candidate stated.
New York City advocacy organizations voiced concern also.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and communities," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency Rules
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the organization has claimed it will not apprehend American nationals. However, external research has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the present government.
Ongoing Trend
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country lately.
An October operation in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are commonplace as are accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.
