Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Action in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female were arrested at the scene and a third person who fled after the incident was located not long after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.
Property Situation
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
He believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
