Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and look forward following their development".
The prominent academic, who once headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' choice to step down.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on this week to endorse a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he plans to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee last week included several prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to link the official to notable international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the general audience, he said he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to restore faith and repair connections with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When declaring his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
Summers entered the board of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
