California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from California and warned eliminating the power to provide CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy stated, after a recent deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to loss of life and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had previously indicated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand federal law," his administration said in a previous release countering Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recently conducted survey revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of previous highs to current figures.

In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
