Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital Auction
A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which operates locations throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," stated the business owner, a familiar participant at the annual first sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."
This new purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to surpass his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
