‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to goals with Athletic
Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an young appearing for the reserve team against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in the country, against the English side weeks after, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I’m not certain the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partly because of the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. However, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a million fans after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he states.
The player believed it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, the cut, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, you have everything, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All the minor details: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. From top scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
